The format and the single-listen rule

Listening has 39 multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty, and each recording is played only once. You must train under this exact constraint — replaying audio in practice gives a false sense of readiness.

What to focus on

  • The main idea first: don't try to understand every word.
  • The context: who is speaking, where, why.
  • Keywords that match the question and options.
  • Read the question before the audio when possible, to know what to listen for.

Handling fast-paced audio

Fast speech feels overwhelming at first. Train your ear with varied accents and real French (news, dialogues, announcements). Over time, your brain stops translating and starts understanding directly — that's the goal.

How to improve your French listening

  • Daily exposure: podcasts, videos, radio — even 15 minutes helps.
  • Active listening: pause, summarise what you heard, then check.
  • Official-format series: timed, one listen, with transcripts to review after.
