What is TCF Canada re-evaluation?
Re-evaluation is a re-marking of your paper by another examiner. It applies to the sections marked by a human, i.e. Writing and Speaking.
Good to know: Listening and Reading are marked automatically (multiple choice), so there is no re-evaluation for them — the score is objective.
Which sections can be re-evaluated?
- Writing — the 3 tasks, marked by a corrector.
- Speaking — the 3 tasks, marked by an examiner.
These are exactly the sections where candidates sometimes feel under-marked. If your expression score is far below your other results, a re-evaluation may be justified.
Process, cost and timeline
- Request it through your test centre (where you took the exam), within the allowed window after results are published.
- Pay the fee (the amount depends on the centre and organisation).
- Wait for the result: usually a few weeks. Your paper is re-marked by a different examiner.
- Receive the new score: it may go up, stay the same… or, rarely, go down.

Re-evaluation or retake: which to choose?
Ask the right question: is your score surprising (well below your real level) or consistent with your preparation?
- Surprising expression score → re-evaluation may be worth it, especially if one or two points change your NCLC.
- Score consistent with your level → better to retake after targeted preparation. See preparing effectively.
